Yuri
Stoyanov
Following my opening address, Yuri Stoyanov took to the stage. Bulgarian-born
Yuri is the author of 1980s gothic classic THE PALE MASTER and the hermetic
masterpiece THE HIDDEN TRADITIONS OF EUROPE. He specialist subject is
the roots and spread of heretical and mystical movements of the Middle
Ages.
In a lecture, entitled 'The Secrets of the Egyptian Labyrinth', Yuri
focused on the roots and development of the labyrinth design from the
proto-labyrinths of neolithic cave art through to its presence in Egyptian
and Cretan myth and legend and its importance to the medieval Arab world.
By pulling together the various strands of evidence he revealed the
astral and stellar connotations of this important universal symbol.
Yuri's foreign accent and low voice sometimes made it difficult to hear
what he was saying. However, it seems clear that he is taking the origins
of the labyrinth design to new dimensions. I strained to take in everything
he had to say and concluded that I would love to read a book which highlighted
this material. After his lecture I asked Yuri if a book on the subject
was in preparation and, sadly, he said no. In my opinion, this is an
awful shame as I am sure it would do very well. He also pointed out
that he has found Arabic accounts of a labyrinthine structure said to
have existed in the vicinity of Giza. I suspect that these stories will
relate to traditions from the village of Nazlet el-Samman concerning
a local saint known as Hammad el-Samman, who was said to have lived
in a cave somewhere on the Giza plateau. He was revered locally as a
great healer and is still celebrated during an annual festival.
